Colt Express Music

When we had the idea of creating the digital version of Colt Express, the goal was to improve the immersive aspect of the game. We knew that adding sound to the game is one of the greatest advantages of the digital version. We would hear the gun shots from the revolvers, the train engine when it’s running, and the soft clatter of the rails. The application will allow all of this and also provide a chance to add music.

Ennio Morricone

Ennio Morricone

The music is an indisputable asset for creating atmosphere and tension. Ennio Morricone understands that, and he became an uncontested master of westerns music. He notably composed the music of Sergio Leone’s great movies like Once upon a time in the West (1968) or Once upon a time in America (1984), that we talked about in a previous article. More recently he worked with Quentin Tarantino, on The Hateful Eight’s soundtrack. All in all, we found his touch in more than 500 movies, and he has won awards for many of them.

He’s a compositor who greatly influenced us in our musical choices for Colt Express digital. All by themselves, his tracks allow us to imagine the bandits and the cowboys menacing each other in the saloons or in the desert. The most traditional instrument to create these mental images are the guitar or the banjo, the harpsichord, the piano, the harmonica or the jaw harp. This last one, for example, was used in the introduction of For a few dollars more (1965).

Colt Express Music

Looking specifically at the music for Colt Express digital, we referenced back to all those works and many more. But the music will be totally adapted to the game, to the train rhythm and will closely stick with the ambiance of Colt Express, which is very cartoony and much less serious than a John Ford movie!
